BEYOND MOTIVATION

Motivation as is an emotion that propels people to act, think and achieve beyond the obvious. I believe it is spiritual. It gives people the ability to do things even if they don’t feel like doing so .Motivation is action oriented, it raises our expectations in life and makes us want to continue walking towards success. Many people are stuck in a common phase of where and how to start even if they have the motivation to take action. The start is indeed the most challenging phase for "the start is what stops most people."-Don Shula. Motivation as a subject and trait has had significant growth as many people are seeking it.

My experience as a writer/speaker has taught me that it is not only motivation that is key but that which comes beyond motivation. The actions we take after before, during and after being motivated form a cornerstone for greatness. That which you continue doing at a level of self-actualisation and even beyond self -transcendance.When one looks beyond our African borders they see continents that have highly succeeded in many aspects of life, but what is it that exits beyond motivation? What is it that you see and seek to achieve?

I believe that beyond motivation is purpose. You can have everything you want in life, but a life without a purpose is like success without a successor. Purpose is the object toward which one strives or for which something exists; an aim or a goal. Purpose is the keystone in the temple of achievements; it overrides empty resolutions, half hearted desires, incomplete thoughts and actions.Purpose lives beyond an individual’s abilities and achievements, it challenges one to be selfless and devote time and space to breaking new grounds and uplifting others .It is centred on one’s ability to realise that they do not belong to themselves or their families but are a gift to the world. Like a gift purpose is meaningless until it is given out. The full realisation of purpose comes when leave your life knowing that: “You can have everything you want in life, if you just help enough people to get what they want in life.”-Zig Ziglar .So in essence it is not about you but mostly about others.

Purpose is a virtue, it is the ultimate reason for our existence .For what does it profit a man to live a life of success that has no purpose?. Purpose empowers us to be masters of our destiny, it gives us direction .Purpose is like a garden, we have to cultivate it daily through our actions .This does not mean that there are no challenges for storms and hot scorching days will come and go but a heart that is fixed on purpose will never tire .Many a times we cry foul of fate. It has become a part of our lives and chief reason why our live are a catalogue of disasters. The more we speak about fate the more it forms a part of our reality. This way we adopt and are adapted to its ways. Fate is result of us failing to acknowledge and acting on our actions .Fate is what we live under if our lives have got no purpose. A great mind is that which has unshakable purpose.

Purpose goes hand in hand with intelligence as such in order to see beyond motivation one needs to associate with people that sharpen their capacities and don’t have the energy to hate other people; instead invest in ideas, simply because ideas emancipate the mind. The mind has got its on battles that have to be fought .The important weapon for the mind is for one to concentrate on their goals for concentration is power. Concentration intensifies purpose with every growing obstacles encountered. Don’t wish it were easier, but work towards being better and you will want even tougher challenges. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “If you have the belief that you can do it, you shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if you may not have it at the beginning.”Let us live beyond motivation, it only takes purpose.

Moments with Njabulo Moyo

Hour glass

"Again, again!" a voice echoed in my head "on 3 ok, 1-2-3" at that cue I felt electricity run through my body and I wished I could scream. The voice went on but slowly fading away, the beeps and the noises their shoes made too. Eventually it was totally silent and nothing made a sound. Scared to open my eyes because I had no memory of what had happened last I heard voices. The more I heard the voices the more I got scared, then that beeping sound again, now a little irritating then the voices got louder and louder. Curiously I slowly opened my eyes with a soft groan to the light in my eyes. Looking around I could tell I was in a theatre, four nurses and a doctor stood around a bed and the doctor's voice dominated the room with him giving orders. As the nurses rushed around I moved closer to get a good look at what was happening, though it seemed impossible for anyone to have missed me no one seemed to notice me. As I got closer to the bed fear gripped me and
